AAR Railroad Reporting Marks A railroad reporting mark, officially known as a standard carrier alpha code (SCAC), is a two to four letter code assigned by Railinc (for-profit subsidiary of the Association of American Railroads, or AAR) that uniquely identifies the owner of a piece of railroad rolling stock. The mark is stenciled on the sides of equipment such as locomotives, freight cars, and passenger cars. The number that follows a reporting mark is a fleetcar number assigned by the owner. The combined reporting mark (code and number) is used by railroads, railcar owners, and shippers to identify and track equipment. All railcars in interchange service (between railroads) must be labeled with a reporting mark. The railroad reporting mark is generally derived from the assigned companys initials. Due to mergers and acquisitions, some companies now possess dozens of reporting marks from predecessor companies. Equipment is often re-stenciled following a change of ownership, but it is not uncommon to see railcars still bearing the reporting marks of quotfallen flagquot railroads. This list of reporting marks is updated on an ongoing basis and does represent quotactivequot marks at any given time. Some of the listed reporting marks are assigned to now defunct railroads. Others are assigned to current companies but may not be found on any active equipment. Where multiple names are included for a given mark, the current (or most recent) owner name is provided in parenthesis. Marks that end in X, Z, and U are specially assigned to the following: quotXquot marks . assigned to railcar owners that are not common carrier railroads . These may include private car owners, leasing companies, and railroad museums. quotZquot marks . assigned to trailer owners for use on trailers in trailer on flatcar (TOFC) or quotpiggybackquot service. quotUquot marks . assigned to container owners for use on intermodal containers . Marks that end in any other letter are assigned to common carrier railroads for use on railroad equipment in interchange service. Note about container and trailer marks . The quotUquot codes for international intermodal containers are assigned by the Bureau International des Containers et du Transport Intermodal (BIC), not by the AAR. There are now thousands of registered codes due to the rapid increase in intermodal transport in recent years. Some of the more commonly seen reporting marks on North American railroads are included in this list of railroad reporting marks.
